While we don't know the reason for Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), we are able to do something about it in most cases. With microsurgical techniques Dr. Sanders is able to fill in thinning areas of the scalp that are so distressing to women. Plugs are never used with Dr. Sanders' technique.

Medical therapy will usually be attempted first which includes Rogaine topical therapy. During this trial, Dr. Sanders will also rule out treatable medical reasons for hair loss such as thyroid disease and other hormonal causes. Some patients prefer to move right into surgical restoration even with the medical treatment.

If hair replacement surgery is decided upon it is performed under mild sedation while you enjoy your favorite music or television show--bring a movie if you like! After some follicles are "harvested" from areas of permanent hair in the back and maybe the sides of the head they are microscopically dissected and then transplanted into the thinning areas. The day after your surgery Dr. Sanders' office will arrange for professional cleansing and instruction in the care of your hair grafts. Most patients can be back to normal activities within a few days without evidence of having had hair replacement surgery--except for the smile on your face.

Your new hair will start to grow within a few months and depending on hairstyle will be it's full length several months later. Most women can have the thinning areas filled with only one procedure.
